WordPerfect Office IFilter installation on Microsoft SharePoint 2007/2010 Servers

The following has been published as a blog to allow and encourage commentary. Please share your experiences and knowledge of this process (which can differ slightly depending on the SharePoint configuration).

WordPerfect Office IFilter installation on Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007/2010 servers

Note: These guidelines may differ depending on how your SharePoint server is configured.

Preparing to install WordPerfect Office IFilter

Log in to the system hosting Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 or Microsoft Office SharePoint 2010 as an administrator or as a user with local administrative rights.
Close all running programs to avoid file and memory conflicts.
Critical: Stop all indexing services before installing or uninstalling WordPerfect Office IFilter.
Uninstall any previous version of WordPerfect IFilter installed.

Stopping IIS

Click Start on the Windows taskbar, right-click Computer, and click Manage. The Server Manager dialog box appears.
In the Server Manager list of categories, click Roles > Web Server (IIS) > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
In the Connections pane, click the server name, right-click, and click Stop.

Stopping SharePoint

In the Server Manager, click Configuration in the list of categories, click Services, and perform one of the following procedures.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

Right-click Windows SharePoint Services Administration, and click Stop. You can also type net stop spadmin in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click Windows SharePoint Services Search, and click Stop. You can also type net stop spsearch in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click Windows SharePoint Services Timer, and click Stop. You can also type net stop sptimerV3 in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click Windows SharePoint Services Tracing, and click Stop. You can also type net stop sptrace in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click Windows SharePoint Services VSS Writer, and click Stop. You can also type net stop spwriter in the Command Prompt window.
Close the Server Manager dialog box.

Note: You must perform these steps for all other SharePoint services running.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010

Right-click SharePoint 2010 Administration, and click Stop. You can also type net stop spadmin V4 in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click SharePoint 2010 Timer, and click Stop. You can also type net stop sptimerV4 in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click SharePoint 2010 Tracing, and click Stop. You can also type net stop sptraceV4 in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click SharePoint 2010 User Code Host, and click Stop. You can also type net stop spusercodeV4 in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click SharePoint 2010 VSS Writer, and click Stop. You can also type net stop spwriterV4 in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click SharePoint Foundation Search V4, and click Stop. You can also type net stop spsearch4 in the Command Prompt window.
Right-click SharePoint Server Search 14, and click Stop.You can also type net stop osearch14 in the Command Prompt window.
Close the Server Manager dialog box.

Note: You must perform these steps for all other SharePoint services running.

Installing WordPerfect Office IFilter on Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 or Microsoft Office SharePoint 2010

Depending on the operating system, run the appropriate WordPerfect Office IFilter executable file (32-bit or 64-bit).
Follow the instructions in the setup.

Note: You can only install the 32-bit version on 32-bit operating systems. On 64-bit operating systems, however, installing both 32-bit and 64-bit versions ensures WordPerfect Office IFilter works with all installed search engines.

Configuring WordPerfect Office IFilter on Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 or Microsoft Office SharePoint 2010

After installing WordPerfect Office IFilter, perform the following steps:

Restart the system hosting Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 or Microsoft Office SharePoint 2010.
Log in to the system as an administrator.
Restart all services in the Server Manager that you stopped (that didn’t restart automatically) in the reverse order you closed them by clicking Configuration in the list of categories, clicking Services, right-clicking the service, and clicking Start.
Perform one of the following procedures:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
  1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and start SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
  2. Log in with administrator rights.
  3. In the Shared Services Administration area, click Shared Services.
  4. Enter your administrator credentials.
  5. In the Search area, click Search settings.
  6. In the Crawl Settings area, click File types.
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010
  1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and start SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.
  2. Log in with administrator rights.
  3. In the Application Management area, click Manage service applications.
  4. Click Search Service Application.
  5. In the Crawling area, click File types.
Click New File Type, add the following file format extensions:
- qpw
- shw
- wp
- wpd
- wpg
- wpt
Click OK.
Sign out, and quit SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration or SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.
Open your browser and navigate to your SharePoint site.
On your SharePoint site, do one of the following:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 — Click the Document Center tab, click Documents, and click Upload.
- Microsoft Office SharePoint 2010 — Click Shared Documents, and click Add document.
Add a sample QPW, WP, WPD or WPT document.
For easier testing of the search feature, include a unique word or phrase in each of these sample files.
Only documents that are saved and checked-in can be found when searching.
Sign out, and quit your SharePoint site.
To re-crawl the index, perform one of the following procedures:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
  1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and start SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
  2. Log in with administrator rights.
  3. In the Shared Services Administration area, click Shared Services.
  4. Enter your administrator credentials.
  5. In the Search area, click Search settings.
  6. Click Content sources and crawl schedules.
  7. Click Local Office SharePoint Server sites.
  8. Enable the Start full crawl of this content source checkbox, and click OK.
    The index is rebuilt. When the rebuilding of the index is complete, the status will appear as Idle on the Manage Content Sources page. The rebuild time varies depending on the number of documents stored on your server.
  9. Sign out, and quit SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010
  1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and start SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.
  2. Log in with administrator rights.
  3. In the System Settings area, click Manage services on server.
  4. In the Service list, click SharePoint Server Search.
  5. Click Search Service Application.
  6. In the Crawling area, click Content Sources.
  7. Click Local SharePoint sites.
  8. Enable the Start full crawl of this content source check box, and click OK.
    The index is rebuilt. When the rebuilding of the index is complete, the status will appear as Idle on the Manage Content Sources page. The rebuild time varies depending on the number of documents stored on your server.
  9. Sign out, and quit SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.
To ensure that your changes have been applied, restart your server (or stop and restart the SPSearch or SPSearch4 service), open your browser and navigate to your SharePoint site, and search for text you know is in your sample file.

Uninstalling WordPerfect Office IFilter

Note: Previous versions had different names:

Version 1.0 — Corel WordPerfect Office - iFilter (64-bit)

Version 1.2 — WordPerfect IFilter (32-bit or 64-bit)

Version 1.3 — WordPerfect Office IFilter (32-bit or 64-bit)

Windows XP or Windows Server 2003

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Control Panel.
Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Choose WordPerfect Office IFilter from the list in the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, and click Change/Remove.
When the setup appears, enable the Remove option.
Click Next to proceed with the uninstallation.

Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Control Panel.
Click Uninstall a program under Programs.
Double-click WordPerfect Office IFilter on the Uninstall or change a program page.
Follow the uninstallation instructions in the setup.

Note: If you have both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the WordPerfect Office IFilter installed and remove one version, you must repair or reinstall the remaining version.

Why are WordPerfect users so passionate?

Hello! For those of you that don’t know me - my name is Peter Hanschke - I’m the Director of Product Management for the Productivity Software Group here at Corel. I look after WordPerfect, Perfect Authority, Corel Office, PDF Fusion and the just released WordPerfect eBook Publisher add-on. Since my arrival last year, I’ve been getting to know some of our users, and my impression is that we have a very loyal and passionate user base and a strong team at Corel that cares deeply about these users.

I was at the recent LegalTech show in New York to get a feel for the community we serve. I was blown away by the shear passion that users have for WordPerfect. Over the course of 3 days I couldn't get over how many users came to the booth to talk about their uses of WordPerfect. It was a real pleasure to see such passion for a product ...very few products elicit such passion. But the product manager in me always has to ask 'why'. Why is there such passion? Why did attendees make a beeline to our booth to tell their WordPerfect story? I read a blog from early 2011 that reported a statistic from a survey where 14% of the law firms and legal departments who responded said they used WordPerfect. In a world dominated by MS Office, I'm proud to say that we have a solid position in this community. I'm convinced that the reason for this passion is because our users believe that we've built a product that meets their needs like no other ... and some of them have believed this for more than 20 years.

There are many reasons why people love WordPerfect, and they are not necessarily all the same reasons. The Reveal Codes feature is probably the best known. But what are some of the other features that WordPerfect users absolutely love? By looking through the results of recent formal and informal research and talking to users, I discovered the following that are ranked high amongst our users.

1) Have you ever had a PDF that you needed to change but have lost the source file? Whether the PDF was created in Word, WordPerfect, Notepad or scanned? Maybe it's a single page or maybe it's an entire document. You could always retype it - but that's very time-consuming and prone to errors. WordPerfect's PDF's capabilities will read the PDF and make it editable. You can then make your changes and save it as a WordPerfect file, a Doc file or even back as a PDF.

2) Do you need your invoice to fit on one page? Are you submitting a paper that can only be six pages long? WordPerfect's Make It Fit feature adjusts fonts, margins, and line spacing settings to suit the space - saving you time and making your document look professional. You can make selected text or all text in a document fit a specific number of pages.

3) Are you ever stuck with an old file that your software cannot open and you end up having to actually retype it from scratch? This problem is not likely to happen with WordPerfect since we've been supporting the WPD file format - both ways - all the way back to the 1990's! And we are 100% committed to stay the course. Need to view your WPD files on your iPhone(r) or iPad(r)? We have an app for that (available on the Apple App Store)!

4) Ever receive documents (or bring in text from other software) that you need to finish up and get out the door in a hurry – but you cannot seem to figure out how to remove bold or text color or there is a page-break that should no longer be there? Reveal Codes in WordPerfect is legendary when it comes to managing formatting in your document. Turn on Reveal Codes and delete the unwanted formatting.

My goal is to continue the tradition of making a product that excites our users and is useful to them. With 74% of our current WordPerfect legal users being Very Satisfied with the product, and a star rating of 4.3 on Amazon.com (as voted by first-time users of WordPerfect) I’d say that we are doing a good job. Could we do a better job? We will always strive to do better!

In my first post on the Corel blog, I offered my point of view on life at Corel -- and described how exciting it is to work on products I use at home.

In my follow-up post, I illustrated a specific example: my countless hours spent video-editing family memories with Corel VideoStudio.

In this blog post, I'd like to express my soft-spot for WordPerfect Office X5. And, in the spirit of the Holiday season, I can't think of any better way than through "The Sound of Music."

Why do I favor these features, you ask? Let's take a closer look!

Walkthroughs and guides that say "Welcome!" like doormats

New to the WordPerfect X5 party? Or just eager to make the most of its festivities? Several features are designed to meet you at the doorstep and usher you in for a personal tour:

Workspace Manager -- simulates other working environments by rearranging or hiding menu commands and other workspace features (Tools > Workspace Manager)
PerfectExpert -- offers project templates with built-in, step-by-step instructions (File > New From Project)
Reference Center -- centralizes all learning resources into an easy-to-browse, categorized launcher (Help > Reference Center)

Magic Reveal Codes that show all your formats

Holiday tip: Don't wrap up a present before checking it for tags.

WordPerfect tip: Don't wrap up a document before checking it for tags -- formatting tags, that is! To peek behind the scenes at the WordPerfect X5 "elves" hard at work on your document, just click View > Reveal Codes.

Double-click a tag -- to display, and tweak, its settings
Drag a tag -- either within the Reveal Codes window (to move it around in the document) or outside the window (to remove it from the document)
Modify the look of tags -- their color, font, and other display settings (Tools > Settings > Display > Reveal Codes)

Customizations that fit like a glove

WordPerfect X5 doesn't just help you deliver documents to your loved ones: It lets you take the reins of the sleigh and drive however you want! Here are a few customization routes you may want to try out for yourself.

toolbars -- Choose from a variety of handy presets, edit them to your liking, or even create your very own toolbar from scratch. (Tools > Settings > Customize > Toolbars)
menus -- Choose or edit preset layouts, create your own layouts, or even use the new "Merge" feature to import standard commands into any layout. (Tools > Settings > Customize > Menus)
keyboard shortcuts -- Choose an existing set of assignments, or use Edit or Create to browse, modify, and print a set of assignments. (Tools > Settings > Customize > Keyboards)

These are a few of the features I love!

A Google app that could be a killer

Google just launched a trial of a new service that offers free long distance. http://bit.ly/c2x86w

Their new phone calling feature integrates pretty seamlessly (it is almost too hidden) with their GMail service and pops up a little dial pad on your screen.

Basically free long distance in Canada and US for the rest of the year. Internationally it will cost you.

I wonder what the Telcos think of this? And I wonder if there is not going to be legislation from the FCC and CRTC to help existing Telcos. And poor Skype!

I tried it out and it worked reasonably well. A headset may be recommended. But, as I sat on my couch last night and didn't have to get up to find the portable phone I certainly saw value in this.

Intel - McAfee deal

Intel is bidding to buy McAfee, a security vendor http://bit.ly/9eenaN for $7.7B

So many comments come to mind on 1st read:

Security products now seem to slow down systems so much people disable them. How will having it bound to hardware affect me in future? Can I ever turn it off?
Intel is going to protect us from deficiencies in other applications or OSs? Why? How?
What will happen to security as a category going forward?

So, as opposed to a Google Wave type of potential game-changer (than never happens), this looks to be something that may change how PCs operate going forward. Especially as Intel has the market clout to make things happen. And, if we start embedding "smarts" into the chipset, is this the start of more software integration into hardware? And how will this change our computing?

Very interesting potential with this, especially with mobile implications. I expect we will be discussing this more in coming months/years.

Wave goodbye

A while back I wrote about Google Wave http://officecommunity.com/blogs/wordperfect_office_blog/archive/2009/05/31/wave-goodbye-to-email-not-yet.aspx . A unique way to present and use eMail that I said had the potential to change how we work - just not yet! Seems like Google is now stopping this much-hyped product: http://bit.ly/d71zZT

Why did this not work?

It was cool but something different - Sure it was neat, but people are accustomed to working certain ways. The same reason it is hard to switch people from their favorite sports team, beer or office suite
It was never fully thought out - Waves are cool - but a host of issues and ways you need to work (and make your code work) causes you to compromise on features - and you get a less than promised product
Overhype - if you hype something a lot it is tough to live up to those promises (and that hurts the point above)

Anyway, as I mentioned in my earlier note - I hope no one chose this as something to rely on. By all means keep playing, but don't buy into hype before it productizes.

Microsoft Office launched today - upgrade to our family!

Microsoft launched Office 2010 today.

The big things touted in this release (and my related comments) are:

More ribbon - it is integrated more in other Suite apps like Outlook (some like the ribbon and some do not, so not a huge feature for all)
Better views behind the scenes - backstage, etc (more tools were added to help you see what is hidden by the ribbon so calling these features seems weak)
New video and graphics tools integrated (cool and a nice addition for higher end users)
Online apps (I have made a lot of comments on this before - currently, not a huge feature for most users)
Not touted so much in the release is the new Outlook eMail client (new previewing options and better collaboration make this a sweet app - I am surprised more people don't point this out. But consider this my appreciation for this new tool)

Depending on who you are and your role, this may be a good buy for you or something to just track. Certainly, the "features" available in this release will not appeal to value conscious consumers and small businesses. For larger Enterprises, Outlook and other collaboration features are a plus.

However, one thing to note - Microsoft has removed upgrade pricing. That means that loyal customers basically get treated the same as anyone else. To me, this is a mistake. We should always treat our current customers as special and provide the tools, support and incentives to keep them happy.

With that said, I am pleased to announce a reach out program to Microsoft Office users. If you switch to WordPerfect Office from now until October 31 and send me in your purchase receipt and old Microsoft Office CDs I will send you a check for the difference between the Full price you paid and our upgrade price. WordPerfect Office is a great office suite and you can use the Microsoft Office launch as a springboard to a better office solution and become part of a family that will appreciate your dedication.

Mobile viewers for WordPerfect?

Error 24 and WordPerfect will not start

Hi Folks,

A recent issue with software not starting up for people and popping up an error code (Error code 24) seems to be affecting users of CorelDraw and to some extent WordPerfect. All users that we have seen affected by this have, in fact, not purchased legitimate Corel software. They may have purchased it in good faith, but did not get real keys, but beta ones that do expire.

If you are affected by this for WordPerfect, please respond to this thread and we can see what we can do to get you legit. We will also be dealing with this from a support and Corel perspective so you can check out our website for updates as well.
