I know it's an old version, but maybe some of the old timers can help here.

The first indication was that upon opening up any WPOffice application, I get the error message: "Error: 38 - WordPerfect Office files have been damaged or modified. Please reinstall from your original source."

I tried restoring a previous restore point on my system since I had recently installed upgrades from MS to my windows 7 software. That failed - same error message.

Next, I tried reinstalling the software from my original disk. During the install, I received the error message that a required file was missing from my system. The name was CTL3D32.DLL. I checked and the file is in two places in my windows folders. \Windows\SysWOW64\ and another with a much longer location name. I clicked through the error message and the reinstall completed. After reinstalling, I tried to run QuattroPro and received the same error message as above; i.e. Error: 38 ....

This happened this week. In fact, on Monday, I used WordPerfect with no problems. My antivirus software does not indicate a problem, nor has any other program failed to run -- at this point.

Suggestions?

I'm running windows 7 pro and it's updated to current.

Quattro Pro Crash on Save

My laptop system is a Dell Precision M4300 and MSOFT XP w latest SP and bug fixes all current.

I am running X5 for about 2 years. My problem file has 5 separate files: 1 parent and 4 children, all linked.

The 4 children are data files with NETPVs, Durations, IRRs with results stuff taken from the same cash flow source stream sheet in the parent.

I built the 4 children in Sept 2012 and everything seemd OK except for an occasional load which may have been too much for the system to handle. My system had been relatively "save" error free - but I have expereienced numerous "crash on save" events - but things had got stable whne learned to load Windows Task Manager since the main file is about 5 mg. I watch the monitor and CPU before moving on. I am not running macros; I use lots of references to sheets and data. I have made minimal "development" changes (a new chart or 2 among about 50-60 spread throughout about 10 sheets) again with no apparent issues.

My last "save" was May 5, 2013. We loaded Bitdefender on or about May 24, 2013.

Recently, my system crashed on startup with "\$Mft" error which appears to be a file tracking system table.

Now, I cannot "Open", or "Open/Modify", and then "Save" or "Save As" any parent file which has the links supported by the 4 children.

I can "Save" big data files that have 5 mg with absolutely no problem. (No "Links").

I loaded SP 3 to see if it would "fix" the $Mft and we are planning to reinstall XP from scratch.

1) Are "linked" files a known problem?

2) Should I migrate back to QPro 11?

3) Should I have a single laptop system just to run these QPro files?

4) Is there ANY procedure or PROTOCOL for saving children first, then parent? (It did not seem to make a difference.)

I haven't updated since X3 because quite frankly the newer versions really didn't add anything as far as what I could put on paper. But now that newer versions of Windows are out, I need to upgrade. I was shocked that I can no longer get the academic version as a non-profit like I used to. Also one has to have at least X4 to get the upgrade price, even though I have every version from DOS5.1 to X3. Looks like the cheapest I can get away with is the $199 standard version. That's too much when OpenOffice is free. I can live with the frustrations of no reveal codes at that price.

Any help on where I can get X6 at a reasonable price? WP Is all I need, not the other stuff in the suite.

However, I added a sheet (#7) and entered 5 years of business income data on it. I inserted a "spacer" column between each year and I created one pie chart. Subsequently, each time I bring the spread sheet up, QPro goes down in several seconds. I have tried to cut the data out and paste it somewhere else, but "paste" didn't function (ie, no data appeared. I then tried to delete that one sheet, but QPro went down too fast. I then tried to copy the entire spreadsheet to a flash drive and then to another pc. After going through the copy function I found that it wouldn't write on the flash drive. I then tried to rename and delete the entire spreadsheet including the errant sheet - can't do. So, in short, I can't delete, copy, rename or paste anything .

I have a backup of the spreadsheet (less the bad sheet). I have that data on paper so I haven't lost numbers. If anyone out there has an idea of what might be wrong with the bad sheet, or how I can delete it, that will save me from reentering a lot of numbers..

I currently have WordPerfect Office X4 and I'm considering upgrading to the X6 version.
I'm very green when it comes to the use of WordPerfect, but I have a client who uses it quite extensively. Recently I was asked to upgrade their server, taking them from a Novell 5.1 box to a Server 2008 R2 Standard one instead. When I added their PC's to the network, I had to create new local user profiles on their workstations. Everything else seems to be running smoothly in everything they do, except for an irritation in WordPerfect.

On the systems running WordPerfect X4 (I don't think it is effecting the older versions, but I could be mistaken), entire sentences get underlined in red. This never happened before the server upgrade and profile change, and I can't, for the life of me, find out what is causing it. Can someone help a WordPerfect newb sort this out please?

Thanks in advance folks. And I'm sorry if this was covered before.
WP 15.0.0.528 X5, Win 7 Pro SP 2

I did a search for "box drawing" in all forums but did not get a hit.

This rests on the assumption that the Box Drawing font supplied with WordPerfect is a fixed width font. It does not seem possible for a box font to work otherwise.

Method: Use Courier New 10pt (supplied with Windows). This is a monospaced font. Insert the following special characters from the Box Drawing set to form an upside-down square U:

3,10 3,11 [HRt]

3,9 3,9 [HRt

All lines up correctly. The vertical 3,9s are correctly aligned with both 3,10 and 3,11.

Now use 3,8, a top horizontal, to make the top wider.

3,10 3,8 3,8 3,11

3,8 [space] [space] 3,8

Notice that 3,11 and the right 3,8 are no longer aligned. The same applies if using a hard space [HSpace].

The culprit is most likely 3,8. This can be shown by:

AAAAAA [HRt]

3,8 3,8 3,8, 3,8 3,8 3,8 [HRt]

In a true monospaced font the end of the last 3,8 should align with the end of the A. The screen shows the last 3,8 to end about 2/3 of the width of the A short. Also, the first 3,8 appears to creep into the left margin.

I don't have the font metrics for the TTF New Courier, but it seems a safe bet that all widths of all characters will be the same. My guess is that that the widths of the WP Box Drawing need to be the same. This illustration attempts to show that at least 3,8 is not. The other possibility is that 3,8 is not positioned correctly within its em square, being more to the left than it should.

My solution was to abandon the box drawing characters and just use + - and | from the Courier font. Not nearly as pretty, but at least there is alignment.

Thanks,

Veronica

I write to ask for help with the apparent problem that keeps ebook creation from working, and to point out that ebook creation seems a way for WordPerfect to get a tiny business advantage in the marketplace.

First, the problem.

The standard version of WordPerfect Office 6 includes a project -- a macro of sorts, I think -- that will create a .mobi ebook, which can be uploaded to Amazon.com or converted (outside of WordPerfect) into an .epub ebook. However, I found the standard WordPerfect Office 6 ebook project capability did not work for me.

Thus I paid $10 more to download WordPerfect's ebook module. That worked better, but so far only gets about 75% of the job done.

The problem is that, at about the 75% completion point in its workflow, the module hands off the document to Amazon.com's "Kindlegen," which is pretty much the industry standard code for creating a .mobi ebook. (The hand off, by the way, seems to make eminently good sense.) Kindlegen then completes the ebook creation.

You have to download and install Kindlegen (which is free from Amazon.com) before you can use WordPerfect to create a .mobi ebook. This is where the problem comes in.

WordPerfect has two ways to download Kindlegen. You can choose to have WordPerfect automatically make the download and install Kindlegen on your computer. When I choose this option, WordPerfect does the download and installation. It then gives me an error message that the version of Kindlegen downloaded is out-of-date. It tells me to try the second of my two options.

The second option is clicking on a link that takes me to what seems to be the correct Amazon.com download page for Kindlegen. I then do the download and installation manually. However, I get the same error message: WordPerfect tells me my copy of Kindlegen is out of date and the ebook creation module refuses to run without the current copy (which I actually seem to have just installed).

Summed up, WordPerfect's very promising ebook module will not work because it thinks the current version of Kindlegen is out of date.

Next I point out the tiny business advantage for WordPerfect.

Those who use Apple computers already have at least two good ways to create an ebook, if they so desire. One is a program called Legend Maker. The other is a routine built into Apple's iWorks. Gaining market share for the WordPerfect ebook creator does not look so easy among Apple users.

Among PC users, it is a different story. There are two general approaches to creating one's ebook all by oneself. One approach is to create an ebook at the sites of distributors Kobo, Nook Press, or Amazon's Kindle Publishing. Their approaches all seem to work fine, but there might be restrictions on taking an ebook file from one place and using it elsewhere. I think ebook authors might want to create an ebook on their own PC computers and have full control over it.

Those ebook authors face the second approach: Finding an application to create the ebook. There are about five ways to do this. Each has its adherents, and one can maybe get a good ebook each way. I find that using the five ways is not so easy, that I sometimes don't know if I can trust what would be installed on my PC, that documentation can be scant, that quality varies, and that I am not so sure one or two of them will even be around six months hence. Reasonable persons might disagree with me on any of these points. My view, all the same, is that this tiny market is fragmented and ripe for consolidation. If a well-respected company like Corel moved in and offered a good product, that company would own the tiny market.

Were Corel to do so, I imagine there would never be huge sums of money to be gained by them. Having the best ebook publishing software is more like having the best, say, real estate title litigation template, or whatever. You might sell WordPerfect Office to some real estate title lawyers, who would maybe use nothing else just to get that template. However, there might not be a lot of those customers.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) might enter into this discussion, but I ignore it for now. My view is that DRM is not worth bothering with for the purposes being discussed. Reasonable persons could disagree.

To sum this part up, Corel without much effort, and almost no expense, could dominate a tiny market. All they have to do is fix the out-of-date Kindlegen problem.
