I have been using WP Lightining alongside X4. Recently I have found that Lightning crashes frequently. I uninstalled Lightning, downloaded a fresh copy from the Corel website. Unfortunately, it now crashes on start-up, so I am unable to use it. I don't want to use an alternative program, but I also don't know what to do to get Lightning working. If there is a problem on my system, I need someone to tell me where to look.
I've just tried to uninstall the copy I downloaded from the Corel website, and I got the error message,
'SetupAppExecute::InitInstance()-» Could not load Setup.xml' Could this be the cause of the problem?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Paul Williams
Hi Paul,
Please reinstall the version you received with X4. The one on the Corel website is the public beta version (which came out before X4) so I belivee that is the cause of your recent issues. Simply pop in the CD or reinstall from your ESD (electronic version). If Lightning is "greyed out" on the installer I addressed how to fix that in another thread (ping me if you can't find it). Once you get back on v1 we can take a look at it.
Cheers,
Jay
Can I ask why Corel has not replied to this post in 12 days? I think I should have had a reply by now.
Regards, Paul
Sorry Jay, didn't see your reply.
Please accept my apologies.
Paul
Hi Jay,
I have reinstalled the electronic version that came with WPX4, but Lightning is 'greyed out' on the installer. I can't find the thread where you addressed this issue. Can you send me the link to this?
Hi PaulW,
What you are going to do is delete keys by using regedit (can start it through a dos window and type in "regedit"). Since we are messing with the registry please backup => Especially your lightning files (either online or the actual folder with notes). As a caveat you should really backup your system in case you accidently delete another key you need. With all those caveats - here is what you should do: (did I mention backing up?)
1) Start regedit - search for keys (all programs->Accessories->DOS prompt)
2) use the search dialog (under Edit->Find) to find keys associated to Lightning (will be under folders with Corel or WordPerfect)
3) Delete the key entries for Lightning
(Another caveat - if you have Mozilla's Lightning product installed - which was for calendars probably would be associate to Thunderbird installation) you would have to be careful not to delete any of their keys). If you don't know what either of these are you rpobably do not have to worry.
Once you delete the keys you can try to reinstall using the CDs. It should not be greyed out. Let me know how it works.

On another topic for others who may read this thread. As per the disclaimer on this site. While I work for Corel, this site is not authorized or endorsed or anything else by Corel. So, I get to threads as soon as I can but mostly it is on my own time, so sometimes it does take a few weeks (for which I apologize). In this case I was OK though - phew! But, same goes for any thing I may counsel to try. I am pretty good with PCs, but would hate to do something to your system that causes you pain. So, please do backup.
Thanks Jay,
I'll try this out and let you know how I get on.
I have spent hours on this, deleting what seemed like hundreds of lightning references in the registry. There were no further lightning references there when I'd finished. I then did a complete reinstall of WPO X4, including Lightning. Tried to open Lightining several times and each time got the Windows message saying that the program has a problem and needs to close.
The result is, I'm no further forward, than when I started. But not only that, I find it extraordinary that an uninstall and reinstall process could be so laborious. I have never had to do so much manual work in the registry with any other program. I would like to have lightning, because I have lost some functionality without it, but I'm not sure I would recommend it, with the problems I'm currently having.
Please can you advise me as soon as possible what I do now. Or can I just download lightning separately, and install it elsewhere on my computer?
Regards,
Hi PaulW
I am sorry this consumed so much of your time. The problem was the public beta version being installed previously (the registry work is not needed in X4 on). The good thing is that you now have X4 installed (the bad news is it doesn't work).
What I am thinking is there may be some sort of conflict causing the error. If you still wanted to go forward can you let me know the specifics on your PC? Model, Operating System in use, applications you have open with Lightning, what version of browser you have going.
Thanks in advance. My hope is that I can find what the issue may be from this next level of detail.
On reflection, i think you're right. I have WPX4 with Lightning installed on a virtualised Windows OS on my Macbook, which is running fine. This only occurred to me after my last post.
The problem is with the PC: It's a Packard Bell iMedia desktop with 200Gb hard disk, 1024 MB RAM, 3 GHz Pentium 4 processor and Windows XP Service Pack 3. Applications used with it: Mozilla Firefox 3, WPX4. Apps running in the background: iTunes. Can't think of anything else at the moment. Are there any apps that are known to cause problems?
So - yes please, I'm happy to go forward and with any advice you give.
