I am running WP Office 15.0.0.512 on a Win7 (64 bit) machine.

I have not used the drawing tool in quite a while until today.  I just tried to use it by clicking on the drawing icon in the main toolbar.  About 5 seconds after the tool appeared all of the icons across the top and down the left side of the screen disappeared.  I thought it might be because I had not upgraded to the latest version, so I upgraded to SP2 and tried again with the same results.  Can someone help me get the draw tool to work?

Thank you for your help.

I need to add that if after these tools disappear I click on the menus at the top I get WP not responding and have to restart the program.  Thanks for your help.

The only oddity is that it took five seconds to happen. The other toolbars and the regular menu are not appropriate in Drawing mode.

 That is unusual.

Please check the notes about malfunctioning WP in this thread.

The symptoms sound like template (or document) corruption. Most toolbars are stored in the default template.

I think I mis-communicated.  What disappears is the tools for doing the drawing, things like the pencil or paint-brush, or tool for inserting a line etc.

Thank you for this link to the thread with suggested solutions.

Further diagnosis: I really thought it was my default template with I have added things to over time.  So, I tried opening another "stock" template, the one to do a book report, which I have never used before, much less modified.  When I tried to use the drawing tool I got the same results (the drawing tools disappearing after about 4-5 seconds).  Like with my default template,if I then click on one of the menus (like "insert") at the top WP will stop responding.

However, I have now also tried pressing escape (rather than try to click the menus at the top), and this takes me back to my original document where WP does continue to respond.  This is also the behavior if I do this with my default template.

Because of this, I am inclined to try the "Repair" suggestion you offered in the other thread.  However, I do not find the .msi file you mentioned.  When I upgraded from WP12 to WP15 (ie X5) I did it through a download (after paying online).  Is there still a way to do the "Repair", or do I need to reinstall?

Thank you.

Bob

Do: View>Toolbars

See that all three items are checked.

I have now checked "application bar", property bar, graphics, and "draw shapes" as well as the one I had checked before "Bob's Tool Bar".  Are those the ones you meant?  Thanks for your help.

But then I tried to use the drawing tool again and (once in the tool) the individual tools disappeared after 5 seconds.  I pressed escape and returned to my document.

To repeat my previous post to you:

The symptoms sound like template (or document) corruption. Most toolbars are stored in the default template.

For some trouble-shooting steps: http://wptoolbox.com/tips/RepairDocs.html

It cannot hurt to use the steps and methods listed there -- and in the order given -- to try an eliminate the source of the problem. (If you have accessed that page before today, refresh your browser when you get there.)

The 5-second delay is puzzling, but it could mean that the program is trying to locate the relevant file(s) and it fails to do so. Are you on a network where the program might have been "pointed" to a server? Is the printer you used when you created that document still available and on line? (Just some wild guesses, so you should refer to my lined page for a more systematic approach.)

Thank you Barry for your original reply and now this reminder with additional thoughts.  I have gone through all of the steps in order with the following results.

1. I do not think my problem is with a particular document because it occurs with a blank document, even after I have rebooted Win7.

2. I have renamed my default template and restarted WP with all of my customizations gone (temporarily), and the problem occurs in that configuration as well.

3. I have gone into msconfig\startup and disabled all the programs that load at a cold boot to discern software conflicts.  Yet, the problem still occurs.

4. I have created a new profile and loaded WP15 in that profile only to see the problem reoccur.

5. I have removed all other printers available to my computer other than the one which has been working just fine for 6 months or more.

In all of this testing, I have noticed a symptom which may well relate.  I do not know how new it is.  When I shut WP15 down, one file remains in the task manager (wpwin15.exe *32).  In order to reload the program, I have to go into the task manager to end this process first.

What should I do next?  Thanks again to you and lemoto for your great help.

Hmmmm  ... it appears wpwin15.exe *32 is still running as a process instead of exiting normally. I cannot offhand recall a specific cause relating to your problem, but (obviously) it seems the program is not behaving properly.

Some various techniques that might (or might not) help:

You could try running Windows in Safe Mode, to be sure nothing is interfering.

I assume you re-named the actual, currently active default template when you tested if the template was the cause. (This is an easy mistake to make, since there can be more than one default template installed -- but only one is active: the one in Tools, Settings, Files, Template (tab). This is where the program looks for it and where it will create a new virgin copy if it cannot find it.) Check to make sure.

I assume that a network is not involved, and the program was installed normally and not "tweaked". (That 5-second delay is still puzzling, especailly on a modern system with Win7/64bit running.)

I assume the printer driver is up to date for your Win7/64bit system. That might cause a delay as WP tries to load it into memory. Perhaps it needs to ascertain the graphics capabilities of the printer, and it cannot.

It could be a problem with the printer, or maybe communications with the printer are failing. See http://wptoolbox.com/tips/PrnProbs.html. Is the printer off line?

You could also try installing a known good printer driver like the Apple Laserwriter instead and temporarily make it the computer's default (you don't need the physical printer, just the driver). Then test WordPerfect.

You could try "restoring factory defaults" for WP -- see the link on this page: http://wptoolbox.com/tips/BadFiles.html

If it were my system, I'd probably try to clean out all Temp files and orphaned Registry entries with CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) or similar, then reboot, then try a program Repair.

If that didn't do it, and as a last resort, I'd uninstall WordPerfect and manually clean out all traces of it (there are links to the Corel procedure on my site here: http://wptoolbox.com/tips.html#7_uninstalling), run CCleaner again, reboot, then reinstall WP. A bit of a pain, but if you have all your data backed up -- and various customizations, too (see http://wptoolbox.com/tips.html#7 for some tips) -- I cannot imagine why it would not work to solve the problem. If so, you can copy customizations back into the new installation as explained on that same page on my site.

Beyond these, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. :-(

Barry, thank you for suggesting that I restart Win 7 in Safe Mode.  I did and then tried to load WP 15 to do my test.  When I did I got an error message 38: WordPerfect Office 15 files have been corrupted or modified.  Please reinstall from original media.

I upgraded from WP12 to WP 15 (X5) via a download from the Corel site.  What do you suggest that I do now?  Thanks again.

Bob

Additional Note:  I also just did a "Repair" on WP15 via Win 7's Control Panel/Programs\Uninstall-Change\ Repair.  Once it was complete, I tried to use the drawing tool with the same result as in the past.  How do I proceed most wisely at this point?  Thanks.

Assuming you have tried all the other suggestions to eliminate possible causes (printer driver, network issues, etc.) ... something I am not sure about since you did not say ... then I suppose an uninstall-reinstall is in order. See the "last resort" paragraph in my last post ... Be sure to remove all files related to WordPerfect, as indicated on the Corel site.

Your comment that you "upgraded from WP12 to WP 15 (X5) via a download from the Corel site" could be important information. I presume you mean this was done sometime in the past. In any case, it is possible some files are missing from the WPX5 download. For example, trial versions do not contain everything because of the size of the download (see "If you are updating WordPerfect from a trial version..." on my site at http://wptoolbox.com/tips.html#7). Or maybe the download conflicted in some way with existing WP files.

Conclusion: If it were my system I would remove all WordPerfect program files, templates, etc., in the way Corel recommends on their support site before reinstalling WPX5 on the cleaned system. (You can always install WP12 as well as WPX5, but I'd wait until you resolve the current problem with WPX5. See http://wptoolbox.com/tips.html#7 for some tips on how to set up multiple versions on the same system.)

A related comment: Respectfully, you need to provide timely, comprehensive, detailed feedback on what you have tried and the results. For example: I still am not sure you found the correct default template to troubleshoot (hopefully you are not just using a renamed version of the WP12 default template!), or if your printer driver was updated to work with Windows 7, or even if you are on a network in an office setting. Sad to say, it is nearly impossible to effectively help resolve problems -- especially since we cannot see your setup -- unless it is done in a systematic and informative way. Thanks. ;-)
