WP X5: Can't get graphics to "stick"

I would like to drag and drop graphics in a WP document, and have them stay put.  Instead, they seem to automatically attach to a character or paragraph or page in the spot where I originally paste them.  Then, when I try to move them around, I can drag just fine, but when I drop the graphic springs back to its original place. 

I would like my graphics not to attach to anything until I get them all positioned, and then I can attach them to something. 

Any help would be appreciated.
