Now, admittedly I installed SP1, SP2, and the hotfix all at the same time, so I am not able to identify which patch caused the problem...

X4 programs have all worked fine since I purchased and installed it on my computer......until now. One computer has the X4, another is on x3, etc. It crashes as described above. It is WORSE after installing the X4 "hotfix" - it errs and shuts down immediately instead of pretending it might let you work! The Hotfix is NOT listed separately so cannot be "uninstalled" with Windows...
