What do you want to see in WP X7

Who knows when the next release of WP comes out. But that doesn't mean we can say what we want to see. What do you want to see in WP x7? The ribbon? What?

  • No ribbon please. Worst UI change I can imagine.

    (All these pertain to WP X4; they may be fixed in later versions)

    The ability to overline words, not just underline.

    An outline numbering scheme that applies only to headings. Word and LibreOffice offer this, but in WP if I apply a heading style, the instant I try to number it, the heading reverts to the default text style. Likewise if I have numbered text and apply a heading style, the numbers disappears.

    A document map that automatically updates. Currently, I have to press the 'refresh button. If I have refreshed the document map, then open a new document, the previous document's map is still visible.

    Similarly, dynamic update of word count. When writing articles for magazines, a dynamic word count saves me a lot of time.

    Built-in reference manager. LibreOffice and Word now have basic referencing features. Or perhaps Corel could write a plugin for Zotero? This could be a real killer feature for WP, more so than features like ebook publishing or importing of pdf documents neither of which are particularly well implemented as far as my experience goes.

    Thank you, Barry.

    I recall finding a template many years ago (I used it with WP8) on a university website - the template contained the styles I was in need of. But can I find that template now...?!

  • 1) Multiple page view [like Word];

    2) Smooth scrolling in two (or multi) page view [like Word];

    3) Option to synchronise scroll when displaying two documents in adjacent windows [like Word];

    4) Better support for OpenType fonts to permit the use of OSF, ligatures and so on [Like Word 2010 and later].

    The last is not intended as a subversive attempt to start a Unicode dispute: I'm only concerned about the outcome, not the method.

    The references to Word are only to show that, in these areas particularly, WP has unhappily fallen behind the curve.

  • I would like to be able to use my stylus to mark up and write notes in my documents.

  • How about a journal add-on with customizable templates and the ability to synchronize with a mobile app!

  • An easier way to create styles like in Word.  Like for instance, I can format a paragraph then type a name for it in the style drop-down list then hit the enter key.  I find creating styles in WP X6 a nightmare.  It was much easier in older versions than it is now.  Many times the QuickStyle button is grayed out and can't be used.  I am used to creating a number of templates with custom styles and find this is not an easy task in WP.  I saved WP templates without the system styles, but they keep coming back.  I am just converting back to WP from Word, but must keep Word around longer because of template/style issues in WP.

    On the Application Bar (at the bottom), show how many pages are in the document not just the current page.  It would also be nice to show the word count and not have to keep checking the Word Count box.  I'm a writer and I need to keep below a certain number of pages and words.

    Allow the icons on the Toolbar to be medium size.  Unchecked "Large" makes the icons too small, and Large is too big.  Something in between would make the icons easier to see for those of us with older eyes.

    Creating custom styles should not be a "nightmare". It just takes a little time to learn the best way to do it. (I.e., best for you.) See http://wptoolbox.com/tips/CustomStyles.html for some help and tips.

    You can't create a QuickStyle while the cursor is inside a substructure (header, footer, footnote, endnote, text box, etc.). But for body text, it should be available and as easy to use as the MS Word method. See http://wptoolbox.com/tips/CustomStyles.html#quickstyle

    I was trying to use the QuickStyle in a paragraph and it was grayed out.  I discovered on my own that it doesn't work in headers and footers.  I just tried QuickStyle again and this time it worked.  I don't know why it didn't before.  I spent about two hours trying to create a template and had nothing but problems.

    I wish I could create a new template from scratch without any styles in it.  When I try to do this, it keeps adding Heading 1 thru 5.  I don't want any WP styles at all because they can't be deleted.  Often I get styles that start with an "I" or "L" with numbers following them and have to delete them.  When I create a new document based on my custom template, those WP styles return.  In Word, there is a way to hide program styles so I only see my own.  I don't like having to go through a long list of styles I'll never use then trying to find the ones I want.

    Style and Template management could use some work in WP.

    This sounds more like document corruption than anything to do with styles. See http://wptoolbox.com/tips/RepairDocs.html

    And since we can't see your screen, I'm afraid that "...had nothing but problems..." won't help us much.Try: http://wptoolbox.com/tips/Templates#custom

    It will also help if you start a new thread for specific questions or problems.

    Format> Styles> Options> Settings will let you "hide" styles.

    This was noted on the linked page I gave to you (http://wptoolbox.com/tips/CustomStyles.html). Also here: http://wptoolbox.com/tips/Styles.html#style_settings

    Well, most users I know appreciate the fact that they can easily be customized and tweaked -- particularly because you can see what you are doing in the Styles Editor.

  • Features wanted:
    1. increase maximum number of recently viewed files (as in Adobe Acrobat Professional or Word)
    2. create history of viewed files (as in Adobe Acrobat Professional), such as for past day, week, month, etc.
    3. ability to scroll list of files using mouse's scroll feature from files list (mouse scroll does not work in that menu)
    4.  automatic paragraph numbering doesn't work properly by merely placing an "x" in the "automatically change style when changed in document" box where a previous paragraph numbering setting does not include automatic change in style.
    5. when deleting a word, the ability to delete the word without deleting the punctuation following the word, such as a comma, semi-colon, etc.
    6.  Undo command needs to be expanded to include more "undos".
    7. show the total number of pages of a document at all times (like Word).

    Thanks.

    How are you deleting them now?

    6.  Undo command needs to be expanded to include more "undos".

    You can have up to 300 undo levels. Is this not enough?

  • In reply to BarryMacDonnell:

    I am using WP Office X6.

    5.  When I delete a word that is followed by punctuation, the word and the punctuation are both deleted.  For example, if I were to delete the word "it." in the following phrase:  "the end of it."  Both the "it" and the period are deleted.  Is there a way to prevent that?

    6.  I am glad to hear that the undo command has 300 undo levels.  Undo in WP X6 only undoes the last 3 changes.  Perhaps I have the wrong setting; are the number of undo levels set somewhere?

    Again, exactly how are you deleting the words? Remember that we cannot see over your shoulder.

    Edit, Undo/Redo History, Options button. (Personally, I do not recommend saving the items with the document if you intend to share the document.)
