Can someone please help me? My table is a list of book titles and authors. It was created as an a-z by book title. I want to sort it by author last name so I can end up with an Author file and a separate Book Title file.
You haven't responded. Maybe you have it working. In anycase. put your cursor in some table cell. Doesn't seem to matter which in my testing. Click Tools > Sort. In the "Sort by" dialog that opens, "First cell in a table row" is defaulted. Click Edit or New as desired. Give the sort a new name if it is something you will reuse. In the next dialog, put the number of the Column in the column box. If the author's names are in column 2, put in 2. Leave Line at 1 (unless you have multiple lines in each row.) If your column with Author Names is in the form 'last name, first name' put (leave) 1 in the Word box. If it is the form of 'first name last name' put -1 in the word box. This will sort on the last word in the cell.
If there are suffices to some of the names as I ask in my original response, this will get tricky if in the form first name last name.
Sorry for not responding. There is a header for the column titles. The Author box is the 5th column and is last name only.
HEADER: SERIES TITLE/ PUB DATE/ TITLE/ INIT/ AUTHOR/ TO IPOD/ PAU/ ACHIEVED / / A BAT IN THE BELFRY/ S/ GRAVES/ 0716 / /
I tried to follow tlnett's instructions but nothing happened. Do I leave the default as 1st cell in table row or change it to 1st word in a parallel column?
I opened edit and entered 5 in the column box, left the other boxes 1 and 1. Nothing happened. I must still be doing something wrong.
Thank you, all
I did the following
If you select the entire column for example PUB DATE
The letter A with a down arrow will appear allowing you to sort based on number, alpha or date
Thank you. I appreciate all of your help.
